About "Children of Venys"
“Children of Venys” (2019) is a three-act visual series inspired by the life and death of Saartjie “Sarah” Baartman, who was infamously marked as the Venus Hottentot, and Saidiya Hartman’s essay, “Venus In Two Acts”. The series lives is a celebration of the Black human form and a reclamation from fetishism and erasure of identity.
"ACT UN: ZEPHYR" is the first act of the series, which celebrates the poise and strength of the body through dance. The "children" move with wind as a vessel. In Zephyr, the children allow the ancestral spirit of Black Venys to inhabit them.
